A new spirit of independence

India also has options. India may choose to be a US client, or it may prefer to join the more independent Asian bloc that is taking shape, with ever more ties to Middle East oil producers. Siddharth Varadarajan, the deputy editor of the Hindu, observes that "if the 21st century is to be an 'Asian century,' Asia's passivity in the energy sector has to end".
The key is India-China cooperation. In January, an agreement signed in Beijing "cleared the way for India and China to collaborate not only in technology but also in hydrocarbon exploration and production, a partnership that could eventually alter fundamental equations in the world's oil and natural gas sector", Varadarajan points out.
An additional step, already being contemplated, is an Asian oil market trading in euros. The impact on the international financial system and the balance of global power could be significant. It should be no surprise that President Bush paid a recent visit to try to keep India in the fold, offering nuclear cooperation and other inducements as a lure.

Its a good suggestion, but what about the IT sector in which both India and China are looking forward to the US help and which creates a lot of jobs in these countries?

One can never trust China. There is at least some convergence of interests of India and the US, Japan. But one can see absolutely no convergence between India and China. Any reliance on China will be disastrous.
This is not to say that there should be no co-operation at all. We can definitely negotiate, but a partnership will always remain a pipe dream.
The more strategic option will be to pursue its own path and look at alternatives such as Bio diesel, better public transportation, build better roads that reduce consumption and pursue independent initiatives.

Some of these apologists...after a published interview with the antiwar intellectual Noam Chomsky, The Guardian erased the article from its website and apologised to Professor Chomsky for the interviewer’s suggestion that either he, or Diana Johnstone — an author whose work he praised — had denied that the Srebrenica massacre had taken place.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,6-2084190,00.html

Looks like not many know about the real Chomsky. No one has become rich listening to him and no has lost money ignoring him.

I dont see any reason why we should trust China..a country that rolls tanks over its own citizen cannot be trusted for anything ... if we have a choice between evils why not choose the lesser evil (US)...

The best thing is for India to engage ALL concerned parties. We shouldn't think in terms of either/or but in terms of AND, and thankfully the Manmohan Singh government seems to be doing that.

I agree it should be 'and' but all the time keeping in mind India's strategic goals and national interests in mind - without being blinded by ideology or just being anti-US.
Rahul - True add to this that China has never done anything positive towards India
- always blocking our bid for a seat at the security council.
-Not yielding a bit on territorial issues
-Keeping India boxed in South Asia while always attempting to keep us out of East Asia where we have the potential to have tremendous influence.
Of course all this does not matter to the guys at The Hindu with their ideological blinkers.

Asian oil trading in euros! That was the whole motive of Saddam so that he would no longer be dependent on USA for economic freebies.

Asia needs to control the oil and the best way is to have all the global players deal with us in our currency. Euro is fine too but it would be better if dealings happen in the currency of the traded country.

China's not growing as fast as it should because its thirst for oil cannot be satiated at the present levels. That can change only when there is a change in the policy for oil exchange.

It’s all interlinked but for once, we will need an Oil Consortium to be located in China for trading rather than at Geneva or Paris.

Basically, India has the following options

1: Work with a faraway US to become a regional power and act against Islamic Terrorism. Later once India becomes strong, deal with the US at our own term.

OR

2: Become a slave of the Communist-Dictator-led China to make the local commies happy and allow a Muslim-Dictator led Pakistan, actively instigated by China,to continue to bleed India.

If India want to achieve independent economy status, there are two important things to be done. First, in the IT field, software companies should concentrate on developing international standard products to avoid relay only on service and US dollars. Secondly, India should become energy independent, for that bio-diesel is vital option...

Dear Anand,

I came to your Blog through Varadarajan's link. Found it very interesting. The concept of asian oil trading in euros would be the only thing to rein in the US imperialism, if at all we wish sincerely for it.

Very informative blog. Would like to know more about you. Myself, Rajeeve Chelanat, a blogger, now in Dubai.

Hi ,

I was reading ur blog posts and found some of them to be very good.. u write well.. Why don't you popularize it more.. ur posts on ur blog ‘locana’ took my particular attention as some of them are interesting topics of mine too;

BTW I help out some ex-IIMA guys who with another batch mate run www.rambhai.com where you can post links to your most loved blog-posts. Rambhai was the chaiwala at IIMA and it is a site where users can themselves share links to blog posts etc and other can find and vote on them. The best make it to the homepage!

This way you can reach out to rambhai readers some of whom could become your ardent fans.. who knows.. :)

Cheers,
